Benefits of Fish Oil Supplements
"Fish oil is becoming a very popular supplement for overall health and well being"
In the past several years, many Americans have turned to omega-3 fish oil supplements. Dietary fish and fish oil supplements have benefits for healthy people and also those with heart disease. Omega-3 fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).Omega-3 fatty acids are very important in preventing and managing heart disease.
Research studies show the benefits of fish oil supplements may:
- Reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke
- Slow the development of plaques in the arteries
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythm
- Lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease.
- Reduce triglycerides
Benefits of Fish Oil Supplements
Cancer
Several studies report possible anti-cancer effects found in fish oil (particularly breast, colon and prostate cancer).Omega-3 fatty acids reduced prostate cancer growth, slowed histopathological progression, and increased survival in genetically engineered mice.
Among fatty acids (omega-3), neither long-chain nor short-chain forms were consistently associated with reduced breast cancer risk. High levels of docosahexaenoic acid, however, the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid (omega-3) in erythrocyte membranes, were associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer.
Mental Health
In terms of mental health the benefits of fish oil supplements in studies published in 2004 and 2009 have suggested that the n-3 EPA may reduce the risk of depression and suicide. One study compared blood samples of 100 suicide-attempt patients and to those of controls and found that levels of Eicosapentaenoic acid were significantly lower in the washed red blood cells of the suicide-attempt patients.
A small American trial in 2009 suggested that EPA, as monotherapy, might treat major depressive disorder but failed to achieve statistical significance.
Alzheimer's disease
According to a study from Louisiana State University in September 2005, Docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid often found in fish oil, may help protect the brain from cognitive problems associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Parkinson's Disease
A study examining whether omega-3 exerts neuroprotective action in Parkinson's disease found that it did exhibit a protective effect in mice. The scientists exposed mice to either a control or a high omega-3 diet from two to twelve months of age and then treated them with a neurotoxin commonly used as an experimental model for Parkinson's.
The scientists found that high doses of omega-3 given to the experimental group prevented the neurotoxin-induced decrease of dopamine that ordinarily occurs. Since Parkinson's is a disease caused by disruption of the dopamine system, the benefits of fish oil supplements could show promise for future research in the prevention of Parkinson's disease.
Psoriasis
Omega-3 fatty acids have shown to be helpful with people that suffer from this skin disease. The high anti-inflammatory properties of Moxxor are especially helpful with this.
Green-lipped mussel (New Zealand) oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. It is 158 times more effective as an anti-inflammatory than any of the other fish oils. Moxxor is a combination of omega 3 fatty acid and a very powerful antioxidant.
